This quote is from an unusually co-written book by Hannah Ward and Jenifer Wild called Guard the Chaos: Finding Meaning in Change (Darton, Longman and Todd, 1995), 122. Ward and Wild are both former members of religious orders and founders of WomanSpace. This now quite old book was a relatively early addition to the growing body of Feminist Theology texts that emerged in the late 1980s and 1990s and is perhaps best known as the book that really introduced the word 'liminality' into theology from its original home in anthropology. Ward and Wild are also well-known for editing their wonderful anthology of inclusive and feminist liturgy, Human Rites: Worship Resources for an Age of Change (Mowbray, 1995). It's worth exploring by those of you who lead worship or prayers in any context but as it's now out of print tracking down a sensibly priced copy can be challenging!
